The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
